Winter Came Too Soon

I remember halcyon days when I was in love -

You were the love of my life - did you know that?

We spent hours strolling through sunlit fields,

Holding hands and gazing into each other’s eyes,

Stopping every so often along the way to pick flowers,

Or to smell wild roses that spilt over old fences and gates.

I thought you’d be around forever,

I thought we were soul-mates -

But you slipped away from me, suddenly -

Like the last lazy days of summer that herald icy blasts

Of an early autumn, before winter creeps in

With its grey days and bare boughs -

It was a winter that came all too soon.
